Nissan today announced updated US pricing for the 2015 model year GT-R supercar. The bad news is what once was an performance bargain is now an exotic of sorts, with prices starting at $101,770, plus $1,995 for the destination.
That doesn't seem all that expensive until you realize how many performance cars are cheaper. For instance, the BMW M5 is $92,900 plus destination. If that doesn't sound like a fair comparison, the M5 being somewhat slower to 60, then consider the E63 AMG S-Model, which for $99,770 offers 577 hp, more than the GT-R. Audi's RS7 is somewhat more expensive at $104,900, but comes with levels of luxury that the Japanese car can't possibly match.
What in 2007 started out as a performance bargain somewhere in the region of $70,000 is now more expensive than a Porsche 911 Carrera S.
Now that we're done bashing Nissan, let's try and find out what makes the 2015 GT-R worthy of a $100,000-topping price tag. The car's chassis has been tuned to reduced load fluctuation between the four wheels, giving better stability. Engineers have also fine-tuned electronic control of the shock-absorber valves and and made a host of other suspension changes to improve the road-holding capabilities of the car. The 2015 GT-R is now offered as standard with a new Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT 600 DSST CTT, while its brakes have been tuned for better response during everyday driving.
There are some styling changes as well: LED headlights with Adaptive Front lighting System. The bright shade of red you see in the press photos is also a brand new color, called Gold Flake Red Pearl. The paint has gold flakes for extra visual impact.
