Superminis have always been cute and cuddly. They're the type of cars designed to look like baby kittens or cartoon characters. But ever since the Ford Fiesta facelift, we've noticed they're becoming more and more serious.
Mazda is famously the car company that made the first emoticon on wheels, the old 3 compact, and they're not about to go all serious on us. The same Skyactiv technology that went into the CX-5 and new Mazda3 will also go into this new Mazda2 / JDM Demio.
It's coming in about a year and we think it will look a little bit like this. The KODO soul in motion language blends itself well to the car, despite very compact proportions. Speaking of the new Mazda supermini, we think the current one is way too small.
Launched in 2007, the current generation feels a little crammed, especially since its down about 12 cm on most rivals. The new Mazda3 which came out this year has best-in-class wheelbase dimensions, so signs are promising.
Right now, the only thing we know about the car comes from Mazda Europe design chief Peter Birtwhistle. He said we'll get new Zoom Zoom in Autumn 2014.
