The first-generation (U387) Ford Edge was as popular as mid-sized crossover SUVs can get in the US. However, with the second generation, the Blue Oval might have developed an even bigger commercial success because the 2015 Edge is a global proposition.
Developed from the ground up to be easily convertible to right-hand drive (for the British and Australian markets), the 2015 Ford Edge has a surprise for its European customers: the addition of a frugal and torquey 2-liter TDCi turbo diesel engine.
The least powerful variant, coupled to a six-speed manual, pumps out 180 PS (178 HP) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). In addition to it, Europe will also offered with a more potent 210 PS (207 HP) oil burner that, mated to a six-speed auto, packs with 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).
“Thanks to the new capabilities at Oakville Assembly, the 2015 Edge delivers improved driving dynamics, quality, quietness, interior space and even more technology, and we are proud for our Canadian team to start bringing Edge to customers in even more markets around the world.” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford prez of the Americas.
In order to meet the rising customer demand, Ford's Oakville Assembly Plant outside Toronto, Canada started production of the 2015 Ford Edge at full throttle. The Blue Oval informs that 400 new employees and 1,000 workers announced in 2014 have been trained into making the all-new Ford Edge happen.
For the North American market, the 2015 Ford Edge CUV is available exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission and a choice of three gasoline-fed engines. These are a 2.0 EcoBoost four-cylinder motor (245 HP and 275 lb-ft / 373 Nm), a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 with 280 horsepower and 250 lb-ft (339 Nm) and the capable 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine with 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft (474 Nm) of twist at its disposal.
