Since the first generation (codenamed U387) started production in 2006, the Ford Edge went to become one of the most popular mid-size crossover SUVs in the United States. While the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox is a mere facelift job, the 2015 Ford Edge is an all-new generation, CD4 platform (version CD539N) and all.
With prices ranging from $28,100 to $38,100, customers of the 2015 model year are offered with a choice of three powerplants: 2-liter EcoBoost twin-scroll turbo on the SE, SEL and Titanium, 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 on the same trim levels and a 2.7 EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo powerhouse reserved for the Sport model.
The latter is the engine what interests us most. Coupled from the get-go to a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, the 2.7 EcoBoost V6 is rated 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft (474 Nm). To go on sale this spring with prices starting from $38k for the front-wheel drive model, the 2015 Ford Edge Sport is “a utility vehicle that not only looks beautiful, but is a spirited performer,” as stated by Cristina Aquino, Ford Edge Consumer Marketing manager.
With peak torque available from 2,750 rpm, the 2.7 EcoBoost V6 is far more punchy than the old 3.7 V6, which generated its peak torque at 4,000 rpm. In terms of fuel economy, FoMoCo informs that the Edge Sport FWD returns an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 18 mpg (13 l/100 km) city, 27 mpg (8.7 l/100 km) highway and 21 mpg (11.2 l/100 km) combined. Ratings for the all-wheel drive 2015 Ford Edge Sport are 17 mpg (13.8 l/100 km) city, 24 mpg (9.8 l/100 km) highway and 20 mpg (11.7 liters per 100 km) combined.
As for the other two powerplants, the 2.0 EcoBoost four-banger churns out 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft (373 Nm), while the 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 boats with 280 horsepower and 250 lb-ft (339 Nm) of twist.
