Snapping at the heels of the facelifted Polo supermini, Volkswagen’s updated Scirocco “coupe” has received a cosmetic refresh. Initial details and a small set of photos were released ahead of this 2014 model’s Geneva Motor Show launch in March. Let’s see what’s what.
The Scirocco was never a bad car to look at and it had its very own design identity, different to a Golf’s. However, its tech and cosmetics date back to the old Golf 6, so changes are appreciated.

Starting with the exterior, the lower bumper has been changed and now includes three blades next to the fog lights just like the Golf GTI and GTD. A new, much bigger honeycomb mesh is used in the largely unchanged grilles, but up top a blade is added to give the ‘Rocco an aggressive look (without changing the bonnet… VW you’re being cheap).

To be honest, buyers will likely not care about these features. The LED taillights are cool and fresh, but also pale in comparison to the interior changes. The steering wheel is pulled from the Golf 7, and is a superior product to the one it replaces. There’s a new cluster of gages on top of the dash, but it seems the navigation/infotainment has not been changed, which is a real shame.

Five fresh colors, namely "Pure White", "Flash Red", "Urano Grey", "Ultra Violet" and "Pyramid Gold", along with a new choice of alloy wheel have been added to spruce up the Scirocco.

The engine range is the only place where we can say things have moved on. The base unit is still the 1.4 TSI, but its output has risen from 122 to 125 PS, with improvements made to fuel consumption as well. Volkswagen thing goes on to say that two 2-liter TSI engines will be available, delivering 180 PS (+20 PS) and 220 PS (+10 PS).

Twincharger dead? Sounds like the Scirocco is US-bound....

No big deal? On the contrary. There wasn’t a 2-liter with 160 PS offered in the Scirocco. That was the 1.4 TSI, the same used by the Beetle and I think the CC and Passat as well. This could be related to the death of the twincharger engine, which is being dropped from the Polo GTI as well. Americans have long been asking for this car and I think this is an encouraging sign.

Finally, there’s a couple of new diesels. The old 2.0 TDI with 140 PS is replaced by the new 150 PS unit from the Golf and the 177 PS unit from the old Golf GTD is replaced by the new 184 PS unit from the new GTD… simple, really.

All engines come with a standard Stop/Start system and battery regeneration mode. Look for the updated Scirocco in German dealerships right after its big debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
