I’ve been a fan of the Scirocco R. The interior is kind of sad and hard, but the rest of the car is just so sexy that it doesn’t really matter. The lowered stance, big wheels and blue body just kind of does it for me in a classy sort of way that the Megane RS can’t muster.
It’s because I was a fan of the Scirocco R that back in January I was able to deduce that correct output of the updated model: 280 PS. How? Simple, it’s the same engine they put in the best SEAT Leon Cupra.
It’s not as much as the new Golf R, which has 300 PS, but with so much power and 350 Nm of torque, from just 1,750 rpm all the way up to 5,300 rpm, I really wouldn’t complain.
What about performance. As far as I can tell, there aren’t any official figures yet, but the Cupra 280 DSG takes 5.7 seconds to reach 100 km/h and is limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). There should also be a mechanical LSD in there somewhere, so grip through the corners will be quite sweet.
Speaking of sweet, let’s talk about the exterior changes. Redesigned from bumpers, redesigned bi-xenon headlights, an updated interior and an optional set of 19inch Cadiz wheels identical to the 2014 Golf R have been added. My personal favorite part is the LED taillights, which are not only standard but very sharp.
We think there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing this car not only in Geneva, but at a show in America as well. Fans of the brand have been asking VW to bring the R Stateside for at least a couple of years. Here’s hoping!
