Can't teach an old dog new tricks? That's not true if the dog comes from the city of wolves. Four years after the Scirocco coupe came out, the German automaker has just launched a facelift model, on sale in Germany since starting in August.
While the cosmetic changes are subtle, those made to its powertrains and interior mean this is now a relevant car that can once again stand toe to toe with its competitors. While the new engines bring up to 20 extra PS, depending on the model, fuel consumption has gone down 19%. All six TSI and TDI engines available from launch benefit from BlueMotion technology which saves fuel using start-stop and regenerative braking.

The entry-level Scirocco Sport is now offered with the the 1.4 TSI with 125PS from just €23,900 in Germany. That's a bit expensive, comparable to a MINI Cooper S, but it's due to the fact trim offered (Sport is not the standard one).

Further up in the petrol range, we have the 180 PS 2.0 TSI, a first in the Scirocco range. This all-new engine consumes just 6 l/100km on the combined cycle and costs German customers from €26,225 to own. The 2-liter replaces the old 1.4-liter TSI, which had 160 PS and a twin-charger setup (turbo and supercharger). Strangely, VW chose not to use the 1.8-liter TSI which has the exact same 180 PS output.

You can also order the Scirocco with the same 220 PS engine as the Golf GTI, which will set you back €28,525 with a manual and a whopping €30,425 with DSG.

There are also two diesel engines available, both 2-liter units, making either 150 or 184 PS and available with two gearbox choices. Prices range from between €28,225 and €31,650.

Remember, these numbers are from German market configurator. Volkswagen has previously announced UK pricing for the new coupe, which we covered in our previous report. As for America… we wouldn't hold our breath.

All Scirocco owners we know like to do most of their driving at night, when the streets are clear. And it's then that the facelift comes alive, thanks to standard LED taillights and a dazzling set of revised xenon headlights. And if the 220 PS version's 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.5 seconds doesn't impress, than customers can always go for the Scirocco R, which needs only 5.5 seconds.
