Ford has launched the new Explorer Sport, a performance SUV with cool exterior touches, and decent economy thanks to its turbocharged EcoBoost engine.
The big story with this car is that it packs an all mighty 350 hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine, and four-wheel drive with a Terrain Management System. You won’t be racing Corvettes any time soon, but the engine is mated to a paddle-shifted six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission with a new 3.16 to 1 final drive ratio, for that sporty feel.
“Adding an EcoBoost drivetrain to Explorer Sport delivers even more fuel efficiency and performance to the lineup,” said Bill Gubing, Explorer chief engineer. “This is our highest- performance, most capable Ford Explorer ever.”
The sport has not been priced yet, nor has a market launch date been set, but we can already tell you it can be configured in four exterior colors, including Ruby Red Metallic Clearcoat, White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat, Tuxedo Black Metallic and Ingot Silver Metallic. It’s also got painted 20-inch wheels, double exhaust, Charcoal Black leather inside and black accents for the body.
We’re guessing this will be a direct rival to the Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.7-liter V8, so expect 0-62 mph in 8.5 seconds or a bit under. Ford also says the Explorer sport will do 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
