2013 Chevrolet Malibu Recall: Unintentional Airbag Deployment

The Chevrolet Malibu might have received a 2012 Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, but it’s not completely safe yet. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall of certain Malibus due to a potentially dangerous flaw - the drivers side roof rail airbag may unexpectedly deploy.
This happens only in situations when the breaks have to be heavily used to stop, when the crash sensor actually believes an accident has taken place due to a model getting reset. During this reset, if you take a strong turn, the sensors will falsely think you’ve rolled the Malibu over and deploy the roof rail airbag.

4,304 units of the freshly built Malibu sedan will have to hit the dealer’s lots where the sensing and diagnostic module will be reprogrammed. To find out if your car is affected, contact the NHTSA hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
