2010 Mazda3 Gets Real at Detroit

Mazda has finally launched the all-new 2010 Mazda3 model, a redefined, re-engineered and restyled sport compact that climbs atop its predecessor's tall shoulders, as the Japanese automaker proudly said in a press statement. Aside from the fact that it's quite obvious to see Mazda praising its model, the new Mazda3 is indeed an eye-catching car that comes with several upgrades when compared to the previous model.

"This product has earned its stripes as a high quality and exciting sport compact. Our customers voice four reasons why they choose this product over direct competitors as well as alternatives outside the sport-compact segment,” David Matthew, MAZDA3's vehicle line manager, said.

Just like many other models that debuted at this year's Detroit Auto Show, the new Mazda3 is particularly focused on fuel economy, with consumption reduced as much as possible through a number of technologies. One of them is the aerodynamics, Mazda said in a statement to the press, with the “subtle reshaping of the front bumper beam greatly diminishing the turbulence of air passing through the grille.”

The interior has been customized with several new systems meant to assist the driver while in motion and to provide easy to reach information just when he needs it. The two large instrument clusters, the Multi-Information Display screen with audio, navigation and trip details are specifically aimed at this. Beside leather trims on top models, Mazda3 also comes with several connectivity features such as Bluetooth support that lets owners pair their mobile phones with the on-board computer.

The 2010 Mazda3 excels in safety, the Japanese automaker said, with standard features such as ABS, electro-hydraulic power steering, Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control. Crumple zones, six airbags, active head restraints and side-curtain airbags make the new Mazda3 one of the safest models in this segment, Mazda stated.

Last but not least, the engine. The all-new model is powered by a 2.0-liter engine that produces 148 horsepower at 6500 rpm combined with 135 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm. There are two transmission configurations available, an automatic and a manual, which help the engine unit provide a fuel consumption of 25 mpg in city mode. The 2.5-liter engine version releases 167 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque.

"The front-to-rear rise of the beltline gives the MAZDA3 a crouched, expectant look of a predator ready to pounce. This treatment also provides functional benefits. The low-in-front window opening provides excellent outward visibility. The driver can easily spot lane markings and the road surface close to the car. But a higher belt-line in the rear seat area gives occupants a greater sense of security. Likewise, the elevated decklid surface is both an aerodynamic aid and a means of maximizing trunk room,” Jonathan Frear, who was closely involved in Mazda3's design process, said.
