The 2002 MY Buell XB9S Lightning sports an air-cooled, four-stroke, 984cc, 45-degree pushrod V-Twin powerhouse paired to a five-speed manual transmission with a Kevlar belt and can produce a claimed 92 horsepower and 97 Nm of torque.

This powerful naked, has been designed as a lighter version of the XB9R Firebolt, but with a more comfortable riding position. It also comes with feature such as a large, 375mm, ZTL-type front brake disc with a 6-piston caliper, a low-mounted, Showa adjustable mono-shock as a rear suspension coupled to an adjustable Showa upside-down fork in the front, dual headlights, extremely light, cast-aluminum wheels, and a hollow, aluminium frame that acts as a fuel tank and a hollow swingarm that acts as an oil-tank.
