Well, well, well, what do we have here? Could it be that Tesla is currently developing a drop-top version of the Model S? Nope, that's just wishful thinking. What autojunk.nl spotted here is a conversion job from NCE (Newport Convertible Engineering).
The American company announced earlier this year that it developed such a conversion and a Chinese investor ordered some 100 examples of the thing. But here's the catch: hacking the roof off isn't cheap. Maybe hacking isn't the proper term here because Newport Convertible Engineering actually spent six months or so tinkering on their exclusive product.
As it happens, the conversion process employs significant changes to the chassis and body shell to help rigidize the Model S to preserve as much as possible the all-electric vehicle's original driving dynamics and to properly ensure the safety of the driver and passengers in case of an accident.
This is probably the first time NCE's Tesla Model S convertible has been spotted in the wild and it does look remarkably similar to the images released by Newport Convertible Engineering a little while back. What about the pricing? Well, first you need a donor Tesla Model S. That would be $71,070 for the base 60 kWh model and $93,400 for the full-on P85.
Now here comes Johnny: a soft tonneau cover NCE Tesla Model S conversion will set you back $29,000 of your hard earned bucks, but you can easily trump that by opting for a metal roof variant. The latter is priced at a staggering $45,000. By the way, NCE can also delete the rear doors for a coupe look.
