While at first the camouflaged prototype shown in the pictures below may look like the early Quattroporte mules, Maserati is actually trying to fool people with it, because it is, in fact, the new Ghibli - the company’s smaller saloon offering, which is set to take the battle to the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Jaguar XF.
Currently, details are sparse, but the Ghibli will share a part of its engine lineup with the larger Quattroporte, including the Ferrari-developed twin-turbo V8, which may power a ‘hot variant’. All-wheel drive and diesel power are also sure things for the Ghibli, and they are requirements nowadays, if they actually want a desirable and competitive large saloon offering.

This prototype shows that the car is actually very far in its development, and despite the heavy camouflage, we can see that it won`t have exactly the same shape as the Quattroporte, but smaller. In actual fact, it will be slightly more aggressive, whereas the larger car goes for subtle sporty elegance, the Ghibli will be a more ‘in-your-face’ offering, with more pronounced sporty touches, in order to compete with the overly-aggressive German cars in the sector.
