These are the very first photos of the actual pre-production version of the next-generation IS compact sedan, spotted undergoing road testing in Europe. The current model has been on the market since 2005 and a replacement is likely to debut less than a year from now.
This much needed update come not a moment too soon, as the Mercedes C-Class will be all-new next year, powered by an almost completely downsized and more efficient engine range, while the BMW 3-Series continues to be a market leader.
The camouflage is still too heavy on this prototype 2014 IS, so we can’t make out to many details. However, it should have a spindle grille. The styling peaking from under the camouflage resembles the recent LS-CC concept.
The concept also previewed a possible new powertrain for the car, a 2.5-liter direct injection four-cylinder with an electric motor. Yes, that would have to be the IS 300h in the future.
Currently, in the US, the IS sedan is available with two engine configurations, 250 and 350, while in Europe an additional diesel solution, 220 D, can be opted for. Presumably these will continue to be offered with modern fuel-saving upgrades.
