Skoda has established itself as the VW Group’s arm for practical vehicle choices, but know it seems the Czech automaker is willing to move to a new level. Skoda will be using next week’s Geneva Motor Show to showcase the VisionC Concept, a five-door coupe with premium aspirations.
This previews a production model that is expected to reach the market sometime in 2016 and will be slotted in between the Octavia and the Superb.

By the looks of it, Skoda is set to come closer to SEAT’s emotional styling and this appears to be true for all the areas of the Vision C, from the front fascia to the silhouette. In fact, the styling details seen here represent Skoda’s future design direction. Thus, expect to see some of the visual tricks on future models of the carmaker.

Underneath the sculpted metal, we have the VW Group’s MQB modular transverse architecture, which underpins models such as the VW Golf or the Skoda Octavia. The engine compartment holds a 1.4-liter direct-injected turbocharged four-pot. The unit, which delivers 110 HP, can use petrol or natural gas.

Skoda explains that, on natural gas, the unit will only need the equivalent of 3.4 liters of petrol per 100 km, which would lead to CO2 emissions of just 91 grams per km.

Oh and in case the engine sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve heard about it being used on the VW Golf TGI and Audi A3 G-Tron. Of course, the production version will come with a wider range of petrol and diesel units. The VW Group has been introducing one new engine family after another lately, so there are plenty of powerplants to choose from.

As for the interior of the Skoda VisionC, the company explains this will be able to accommodate four adults and their luggage in complete comfort.

"We are signalling the next stage in the evolution of Skoda’s design language with ‘Skoda VisionC’, and thus highlighting the dawn of the brand.  The vehicle demonstrates the company's outstanding design and engineering expertise, and underpins the dynamism and value of one of the world's longest-established automotive companies," Prof. Dr. h.c. Windried Vahland, Skoda CEO, said.

The public reaction to the VisionC at the Geneva Motor Show will probably shape some of the decisions that have yet to be made about the vehicle. And since its implication go beyond the car itself, it seems that Skoda’s entire future is set to change at the Swiss event.
