After a set of successful test sessions of both the RX-8 SP and Mazda3 MPS, it’s been announced that Mazda Motorsport will be returning for the second round of the Australian Tarmac Championship in Hobart. The team looks ready to redeem itself after the disappointing result at last Targa High Country rally.
“The car was running as well as I’ve ever seen it at Targa High Country, but somehow the team has managed to further refine and improve it. I can’t wait to get it on the tarmac and show the competition what we are really made of," said RX-8 Sp driver Steve Glenney.
Glenney has managed to find improved balance for the RX-8, resulting in better track times while testing. Meanwhile, the Mazda3 MPS has also undergone extensive work, after it was significantly damaged in an accident that ended its excellent run at the recent Targa High Country event. The MPS now sports a more aggressive look that should make it it one of the most recognizable cars in the field. Its new yellow and black color scheme is a further demonstration that Mazda Motorsport boss, Allan Horsley is not a conservative thinker when it comes to motorsport.
Brendan Reeves will be behind the wheel of the Mazda3, and will be partnered with experienced Tasmanian Simon Vandenberg at the Targa Wrest Point event. His usual co-driver, Rhianon Smyth, could not make it, as she is still recovering from a leg injury sustained at the 2009 rally event.
“It’s unfortunate that Rhianon isn’t able to be beside me for Targa Wrest Point but I’m delighted to have someone of the calibre of Simon calling out the notes for me. His past results speak for themselves and we’re both looking forward to a strong run in Hobart”, said Reeves.
