Renault's new model offensive continues with the launch of the all-new Megane Estate this week. The Kim Kardashian version of the boldest compact hatch has a lot of nice features and can be ordered from just under €20,000.
How do we know? The official configurator is up. However, that will only get you the base Life trim level and a 1.2-liter turbo engine delivering 100 hp.
The model we want costs €33,420 and packs over double the power from its 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. We are talking about the Megane GT Estate, fitted as standard with a hot hatch motor and a twin-clutch gearbox.
All things considered, the new Megane Estate is decent value, because the one it replaces started from €21,500. The equivalent SEAT Leon ST starts at €21,215 and a VW Golf Variant will set you back even more.
One crucial difference between the Megane and cars made by the VW Group are the tiny engines used by the French automaker. The biggest diesel is the 1.6 dCi that pushes 130 PS normally or 160 when fitted with a second turbocharger.
Unlike the boxy wagons of old, Renault has designed lots of crazy curves and edges into the Megane Estate. The roof slopes gently to make it look sportier, while the 3D taillights almost connect in the middle.
The trunk opening isn't a big square like on the Volvo 240, but it's good enough. With the rear seats in place, you get 580 liters of space, plus another 50 under the floor. When they are down, the volume grows to 1,504 liters. The front seat doesn't fold flat, but you can probably still transport packages over 2 meters.
Three different brochures were made available, of which we want to share the one with all the technical specifications. According to that, the Megane GT Estate has 320mm front brakes, reaches 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and averages 6 l/100km. The only drawback we see is the 1,392 kg weight.
