2016 Renault Megane Estate Teaser Photo Released Ahead of February 22 Debut

We call them compacts, but there's nothing compact about them, and they seem to do everything. In Renault's case, the next new compact is a family wagon, the 2016 Megane Estate.

A few days ago, the French automaker announced two new C-segment (that's what they call a compact) cars would debut at the Geneva Motor Show. We guessed both of them right, as a teaser photo was released on Facebook and Twitter only a few hours ago. Of course, they didn't tell us it's a wagon, so we gathered a few photos from competitor models that will prove us right. By doing so, we hope you guys will notice that there's a common theme with these models.

Estates are supposed to be long boxes that can carry luggage for a month-long vacation. However, if they are not sexy, people will just continue to buy crossovers instead. Renault and other European manufacturers realized that by raising the belt line and giving the roof a subtle slope towards the back, they give wagons a sportier look. The all-new Megane clearly has that in this first teaser photo.

Just like the Clio 4 Estate, it also gets curved bulged rear shoulders for a masculine Volvo-like look. Roof rails will make installing cross-bars easier. We can't see anything else, but suspect that a GT model with big wheels and silver mirrors is hiding in the dark. It would be great if Renault could give us a 205 horsepower family car.

There should be plenty of other engines available. The base unit is either a 1.6-liter or a 1.2-liter turbo rated at 100 hp, maybe even both. The petrol range will also include a 130 PS 1.2 turbo and a more powerful 1.6 turbo. The diesel options will include the 1.5 dCi with 90 and 110 PS and the 1.6 dCi with 130 and 165 PS (arrives at the end of 2016).

Renault won't try to rival the successful Auris Hybrid with a gas-electric model. However, a mild hybrid model will arrive soon and promises less than 80 grams per kilometer of emitted CO2.

Do you guys want to buy an all-new Renault Megane Wagon? We do if it's got all-wheel steering and a Clio RS engine.
