Our spy photographers sent in the newest and best pics yet of the 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Internally known as the Alfa Romeo Tipo 949 D-SUV, the compact luxury crossover SUV is slated to go into production in the fourth quarter of 2016.
In the photo gallery below, you can see the Stelvio getting unloaded for its first tests on the grueling Nurburgring, the motorsport complex used by automakers to fine-tune the suspension and electronic driving aids of new cars. Alfa Romeo had better get a move on considering that the estimated time of arrival for the Stelvio is the Mondial de L’Automobile in Paris, which is planned for the 1st of October.
Alfa Romeo head honcho Harald Wester declared that “late autumn” is when the Stelvio is bound to make its first public appearance. Because of this, the rumor mill speculates that the Stelvio could very well debut at the L.A. Auto Show in November. All in all, there’s no doubt the first units will be delivered next year.
To be assembled next to the Giulietta hatchback and Giulia sedan at the Cassino Plant in Piedimonte San Germano, the Stelvio will be offered with an array of four- and six-cylinder engines. All powerplants will be force-fed because that’s how Alfa Romeo rolls these days. The range-topping Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio will mirror the awe-inspiring Giulia Quadrifoglio as far as the powertrain is concerned.
If a Ferrari-infused twin-turbo V6 with 503 horsepower (510 PS) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) is too much to handle, the Stelvio will also be available with a 2.0 GME T4 four-cylinder turbo petrol and a 2.2 JTDM turbo diesel. A 3.0-liter twin-turbo diesel engine developed with the aid of VM Motori is also in the cards.
Watch this space for pictures of the Stelvio dropping hot laps on the Nurburgring as soon as we get them.
