The next generation Ford Mustang will receive a new platform designation as part of the Blue Oval's plans to significantly change the future global muscle car.
According to MustangsDaily.com, who's citing an anonymous inside source, the 2015 Mutang will be designated as having the S550 platform, instead of the S197 moniker used for the fifth generation. In short, this means Ford will introduce a new platform for the fifth time in the model's 50 year history.
We still don't know what the new Mustang will look like, except the fact that it will be unlike anything we've seen before. We do know that the new pony car will be sold in Europe as part of the company's aim to become global, so that means the car will be both lighter and smaller than the current S197 platform.
Rumors are still divided regarding its styling, the Mustang being linked, for some reasons, with the Ford Evos Concept and a Fusion-based coupe. On the other hand, the Blue Oval made it clear that the design will be less retro, but will "try to win all of the Mustang faithful yet bring the brand forward as well."
Aside from the new exterior styling, the 2015 Mustang will also receive an independent rear suspension and new smaller turbocharged engine options.
