As most of you are aware by now, Ford is going to prove that the Mustang can evolve into a domesticated racing horse for its 50th birthday. The American automaker plans to build the next generation model, due in 2014, using some sort of new global architecture.
We already know that the design will be more modern than the retro style we’ve become accustomed to. The 2015 model year pony will look much like the Ford Evos Concept that sparked a design revolution, which gave us the Escape and the Fusion.
But the technical changes for the 2015 Mustang are even more severe. We already know that a test mule is testing independent suspension with the intent of putting it into production with the next generation.
What’s under the bonnet is equally as important, and downsizing seems to be on Ford’s mind. While speaking to Matthias Ton, the chief program engineer for the Focus ST about the Focus RS, AutoExpress learned that a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder will replace the current V6 in the Mustang engine lineup.
The good news is while being economical, the four-banger will also be much more powerful than the current 3.7-liter V6. Currently, the tune is as 330 horsepower, though this will be adjusted to get the best blend of performance and economy that Ford likes.
