Wowzers: This One-of-77 2019 Porsche 935 Has a $44K Spare Parts Pack and a Special Wrap

It might feel a bit exaggerated, but we must double down on the above statement: it's simply a miracle that anyone with enough funds available can buy the 49th 2019 Porsche 935. This type of vehicle doesn't normally surface to be seen by virtually any enthusiast. Such high-level deals are often private. They never reach the general public.

So, let's take a moment to appreciate that this year's used car market is getting one great auction that will help us remember it. Among everything that's going on with the economy, the problems brought forward by geopolitical instability, and the problems that plague the automotive industry, this GT2 RS-based monster is a sight for sore eyes.

That's not because the race car had a price of over $1 million when it was acquired from Porsche Motorsport North America. It's more about what it represents for the car world and gearheads. The 935 may not be street-legal, but it is glorious.

Porsche built just 77 highly individualized copies to mark its 70th anniversary and pay tribute to the original 935 known as "Moby Dick." Back in 1978, the OG unit featured water-cooled cylinder heads and an aerodynamic body that set it apart from other competitors.

It finished the 6 Hours of Silverstone race with a significant lead (seven laps ahead of the car in second place) and attempted to take over the 24 Heures du Le Mans, but an oil leak and some misfiring stopped it from achieving greatness. It finished eighth.

The figures that tell the story

Still, the 3.2-liter six-cylinder Boxer engine had an output of 845 hp 45 years ago and reached a top speed of 227 mph (366 kph) at Le Mans. That's part of Porsche's DNA and is what cements its reputation as one of the best auto companies in the world. It's a heritage few can match.

Reimagined for the modern era, the 935 had a starting cost of $829,000 four years ago. A lucky customer who obtained an allocation also picked the optional spare parts package and the optional wrap that gave this race car its magical appearance. Just these two extras added $71,800 to the vehicle's cost. In the end, they paid around $1 million.

Even though the 935 was meant for the track, the owner did not enjoy it too much. They added just 17 miles to the odometer before selling it to a dealer for an undisclosed amount. The vehicle currently displays 90 miles. The new owner added the last 73 miles.

Based on the 991.2 911 GT2 RS, the contemporary 935 has an official weight of 3,042 lb. It's pretty light, as all hardcore race cars should be. The 3.8-liter water-cooled twin-turbo six-cylinder engine mounted at the rear can do its job easily, considering it doesn't have to haul too much weight around.

A seven-speed PDK transmission administers the 700 horsepower and the 553 lb-ft of torque this Porsche makes exhilarating use of, while the limited-slip differential allows the driver to remain in control or get playful. After all, this is a rear-wheel drive monster!

Stopping power is needed, so Porsche used Brembo ventilated 380-mm disc brakes with a six-piston caliper in the front and a Stability Management system that can jump in when things may feel a bit out of control. In case things do go south, there's a roof escape hatch for you to use.

A few more goodies

The 44th Porsche 935 has only one carbon fiber FIA-compliant seat and a welded-in roll cage, so don't expect to impress anyone. Nobody can sit by your side while the tires scream in agony.

The optional livery reminds purists about the OG 935 that won the 1979 24 Hours of Daytona. Although a track-only car, you still get LED lights, 911 RSR side mirrors, and, believe it or not, cruise control. Will it work on the track? Probably not. But the stalk is there!

There's also air conditioning, a fire suppression system, fuel and electricity cutoff switches, and a shifter made from titanium.

The 935 is very adjustable, and it even features an air-jack system. But you'll have to dive in and put those hands to work!

The GT2 RS' sibling that embraced the dark side and decided never to deal with the regular world is available on Bring a Trailer. When writing, the highest bid is $459,059. Although obviously not enough, this is just the beginning. There are almost two weeks left before the auction ends.

A reserve is set, so we expect the best offer to exceed the $1.5 million threshold. But auctions are always unpredictable. It remains to be seen what will happen.
