For some reason, people in China think the Volkswagen Scirocco is cool. Thus, many buy the R version, even though it's an expensive import with somewhat irrelevant specs. A local tuning company called Aspec has also decided to make the 8-year old design more relevant by widening it to epic proportions.
Cosmetic changes start off with bold square air intakes at the front. They are followed by a new grille and much wider fenders that look like they hug race-spec 19-inch forged wheels. The stopping power has been upgraded to the Aspec brake kit featuring six-piston front calipers with Pagid brake pads and steel tubing. All hell breaks loose at the back, where we see a diffuser and the gigantic wing sitting on the trunk like a baseball cap visor.
The full name of the Aspec kit is Performance Project Volkswagen 430R, but you can call it PPV430R. That was our first clue that we were dealing with something extraordinary. If you thought the number represents the horsepower figure now produced by the 2-liter turbocharged engine, you were absolutely right.
It seems almost unfathomable that you can get that much power from a 4-cylinder engine, but several European tuners have done it before by using extensive mods, such as larger turbochargers and sturdier internal components. Aspec has not revealed what it did to the TSI, but don't be put off by the fact that these are just renderings. Their previous project was a Golf R that also pushed 400 hp.
For the record, the Scirocco R is based on a Golf 6 platform and sends its power only to the front wheels. Even though the factory output is the same 280 PS offered by the Leon Cupra 280, we've heard that it's an updated version of the old turbo, not the EA888 TSI unit offered by the Audi S3, Golf R, and hot Leon.
