The idea of vertical take-off and landing vehicles (VTOL) has been around for decades now, but only in recent times this now-not-so-sci-fi- concept became a much-needed tool for making life easier in the city. You know what they say, time is money, and with this new project that Wheels Up and Bell Textron recently disclosed, you'll probably save a bit on both.
Last week, Wheels Up, one of the players now operating in private aviation, announced a collaboration with Bell Textron that would open up a new market for them: intra-urban transport. Because who wouldn't want to avoid rush hour by flying in a VTOL?
The "Dream of Urban Mobility," as the joint companies call the project, is meant to popularize air mobility, of course, and give the two a slice of the VTOL transportation market. They claim that their service will launch later on this year, but none of the two companies goes into specifics on what type of VTOL they'll operate.
The idea of providing VTOL transportation for city dwellers is not the only avenue targeted. Wheels Up is also planning to offer new transportation options for Delta Air Lines' customers. In the future, Wheels Up members and Delta customers will be able to choose VTOL as another solution for their travel needs.
With its unique configuration, the VTOL is one of the most dynamic vehicle propositions of recent years, and it's no wonder organizations planning to play in this segment are rising in number. Companies such as Toyota, Uber, and Pegasus have all pushed the boundaries towards VTOL commercialization.
