The Renault Clio RS has been taking a lot of heat for using an automatic gearbox and a turbo engine. You know what? So does the 911 now and it suffers from the same problems. Nobody says Porsche makes bad cars.
If you put yourself in the shoes of a 20-something-year-old kid, the fact that the Clio RS has aluminum pedals from the GT-R and is easy to drive fast sounds like a great thing. Heck, Renault can keep its overpriced 220 Trophy model because you can buy a second-hand model and just install some upgrades from companies like Waldow. No, it's not Waldo, but we think we've found something worth checking out.
Waldow Performance is a tuning company linked to a German Autohaus, basically a dealership that's been selling Renaults across the border since the 1960s.
The first thing you will notice about this Clio is that it's as blue as the Smurfs. The front bumper features black inserts and a chin spoiler, the wheels are black and so are the mirrors. Around the back, we see a big wing and new exhaust.
Open the trunk and you will notice that all the practicality has been stripped away. Just like the Megane 230 R26R, the trunk is full of red scaffolding. At the front, we have a pair of bucket seats with a 4-point harness that connects to the cage. The car also gets an Alcantara steering wheel inside the cabin, but the biggest change is the optimized engine software and NAP sports exhaust with sound control.
That 1.6-liter turbo that everybody loves to hate now produces 220 horsepower. Waldow also made some valuable chassis tweaks that will make the Clio go around corners like it's on rails, added KW Clubsport suspension with adjustable rebound and compression, aluminum strut brace for the engine compartment and Brembo brakes. Moreover, the tuning company is also working on new turbochargers and downpipes so that they can justify the 41,000 EUR price tag of this car.
