While the Google-owned Waze navigation app is one of the best of its kind out there, it doesn’t necessarily mean that everything is always running exactly as expected.
CarPlay users know this best, as Waze has recently experienced several major issues when running on the car’s head unit powered by an iPhone.
After Waze broke down the car’s volume control in CarPlay, the application now seems to cause the entire system to freeze, even when it isn’t running.
I previously came across various reports pointing to this bug in Waze, and now someone on reddit says the only way to deal with the whole thing is to remove the app completely from the iPhone. Needless to say, this isn’t really a convenient workaround, but the good news is that the Waze team is said to be working on a fix already and an updated version should go live soon.
“When I have Waze on my phone CarPlay freezes exactly 15 minutes after plugging the phone to the car. I tried by not using the app, but the problem persists. And when the freeze does happen the only thing I am able to do is a soft reset on the car’s multimedia (holding the power button for like 15 seconds). The only solution I found is uninstalling the Waze application completely from my phone,” one user explains.
Of course, all the other navigation apps, including Google Maps, work just as expected and no freezing is experienced on CarPlay.
It goes without saying that an app wreaking havoc on CarPlay, even if it’s not running on the car’s head unit, is something really frustrating, but if you want to see the glass half full, this problem still doesn’t seem to be very widespread at this point.
Waze is working flawlessly on CarPlay in my case, and it’s powered by an iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 13.5 with the latest version of the app.
