One of the cool features of the Google-owned Waze (and which comes and goes in Google Maps in various regions across the world) is showing the actual speed of the car when using navigation on the phone or on the head unit with Android Auto or CarPlay.
This is helpful for a wide variety of reasons, including being in the know whenever you’re approaching a speed limit, as the app can warn if you’re speeding or not.
But as some Ford owners have discovered recently, Waze on CarPlay sometimes displays a speed that’s actually some 10 mph (16 kph) higher than the one indicated by the speedometer. So Waze claims the car goes faster than it is, and by the looks of things, this is an issue that’s specific to Ford models.
Someone took to reddit to report the issue, only for others to confirm the same thing in various models, including the Mustang, Explorer, and Expedition.
By the looks of things, this happens with pretty much any iPhone model, both old and new, and some say the difference between the speedometer and the Waze data is bigger as the speed increases.
“2018 Ford Expedition Limited, same +10 MPH issue here. iPhone 8, X, and SE all do it. Those same phones do just fine on our 2018 Honda Accord,” one user explains on reddit.
Some say the whole thing can be fixed with a Waze update, while others claim it’s actually something that comes down to the SYNC system in Ford cars. On the other hand, this doesn’t seem to be caused by CarPlay itself, so there’s a chance that the current speed is correctly indicated in other apps that come with this feature.
