The VW Eos is dead and gone as you are reading this, but some rumors talked about a successor for the cabriolet that could be spawned by VW. The Germans denied such intentions, but some didn't agree with them.
Since the VW Sport Coupé GTE - don't confuse it with the VW C Coupé GTE presented in Shanghai - made such a splash, Theophilus Chin wanted to see how the car would look without its roof.

So here we are, looking at a couple of renderings, wondering if VW sees them. We know, the Eos will be discontinued next month without being offered a succesor, but you have to admit that cabriolet for the ongoing Passat kind of makes sense.

You'll also have to bear in mind that the Sport Coupé GTE prototype was created to fill the gap between the Passat and the Phaeton, so an open top model based on this car would have slightly augmented dimensions in comparison to the standard Passat.

Nevertheless, a hybrid setup would fit a potential Passat convertible from VW like a glove, and they already suggest to be in full control of such technology. For example, the Sport Coupé GTE study features a 3.0-liter TSI V6 engine paired with two electric motors, each one placed on one of the car's axles.

In addition, you'd want a cocoon-like cabin wrapping around the driver in a convertible as well, and VW's new generation of interiors is doing exactly that, at least on their concepts.

As much as some would like to see that happening, the Germans didn't suggest anything to reflect such intentions. Nevertheless, if they will ever build it, expect the Passat Cabriolet to have an upmarket flavor about it and the MQB platform as underpinnings. Also, a canvas setup would be the most likely choice for the retractable roof.
