2015 VW Sport Coupe Concept GTE Revealed with V6 Turbo, Hybrid AWD , Live Photos

The 2015 Sports Coupe Concept GTE that Volkswagen presented tonight in Geneva isn't just another design study, it's a preview for a car that will change the premium market. For months, we've been hearing that the gap between the Passat and Phaeton will be plugged by an all-new car and it turns out that car is a successor to the CC four-door coupe.

The study is much larger than the current CC, being about the same size as the Audi A7. This will have a huge benefit on interior space and also shows Volkswagen is moving even more upmarket to challenge the established German brands with more attractive prices.

Everybody knows you can't make a CLS-Class rival without a decent engine and the Sport Coupe Concept GTE has just that. Under that brightly colored bonnet is the first-ever 3.0-liter TSI V6 engine, making the same 300 PS as a Golf R. it sounds underpowered, especially when you consider some manufacturers push over 400 hp from 3-liter engines. But two more electric motors have been installed at both axles and to give it another 170 PS of voltaic boost.

As is usually the case with hybrids, 1+1 isn't 2, so the total output is only 380 PS. But it's enough for 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) of 5 seconds and a top speed (limited) of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Just like the two GTE models currently in production, the battery gives it an all-electric range of 50 kilometers or 32 miles. Emissions are very low and average combined fuel consumption of 2.0 l/100km (118 mpg US) seems almost unbelievable, just like the 1,000 kilometer (620 miles) total driving range.

The Sport Coupé GTE Concept is indeed based on the MQB platform, while its 4,870 mm (191.7 inches) length make it about the size of BMW 6 Series. It rolls around on large 21-inch wheels and like the Audi A7 the trunk opens like a hatch to give you better access.

Next-gen Volkswagen interiors previewed

The body of this CC from the future fails to impress us because it looks so similar to the CrossBlue, with a wide grille and headlight graphics shaped like the letter C. However, the interior is something we haven't seen before. Looking through the gigantic panoramic roof, we notice better wood trim, a console that fits the driver very snugly and a type of chunky gear selector we think VW has to put in production ASAP.

The back seats are two rather snug buckets that work like on the S-Class, both being connected to the trunk wall directly. The door wraps around the passengers and cocoons them, while a very long tablet selects the movies they want to play on the screens integrated into the backrests.

Everything feels like they looked at a Mercedes cabin and said "we can do that more cheaply and with sporty styling".
