VW Polo Blue GT Does a Nurburgring Hot Lap

Volkswagen Group is often accused of staying in its shell, but the Germans do make some original cars once in a while, cars that rarely get noticed. Nobody gave a second thought to Audi’s new RS Q3 launched last year, for example, or the crazy V12 powered Q7 they had a while back. Another car that usually slips under the radar is the Polo Blue GT, a hot hatch that also wants to be green.
It’s powered by the same 1.4 TSI turbo with 140 PS as any Golf, Leon or Octavia, but there’s a difference. That “Blue” in its name means the Greenpeace will like it because it’s got cylinder deactivation and stop start. It’s the only supermini to have this and it’s also quite fast with 0 to 100 km/h in about 8 seconds.

Interesting? Not really, at least not to most journalists. The only reviews of the car we found are in Dutch – yes, it’s that obscure. But a few people did buy into the improved looks and performance of the Blue GT and one even took it out for a bit of fun on the track. Not just any track though, as Mickael Lo presti, a Youtuber who we think is from France, went to the Nurburgring to do a flying lap. There’s nothing we can tell you about the time he got, since there’s obvious room for improvement in some corners, but with over 200 km/h indicated on the clock more than a couple of times, the GT can be taken seriously.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
