Volkswagen UK just announced that order books have been opened for the brand new VW Golf R, based on the Mk7 platform and offering more power and performance than ever.
The company has released the base pricing of four different models, starting with the cheapest car, a three-door with a manual gearbox that starts at £29,900. The three-door with DSG is £31,315 and the five-door cars are about £600 extra, costing £30,555 with manual and £31,970 with DSG6.
At the core of the new Golf R is the same engine as the Audi S3, its sister model from Ingolstadt. A new 2.0-litre turbo from the EA888 is rated at exactly 300 PS and a very diesel-like 380 Nm (280 lbs ft) from 1,800rpm. That makes it not only the most powerful Golf ever but also the fastest Volkswagen in production.
The two models equipped with DSG will get from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.9 seconds. Top speed has to be electronically limited to 155 mph, still leaving you plenty of room to humiliate Porsche Boxsters.
