Volkswagen executives will probably enjoy Manhattan’s clubbing life tonight, as the carmaker’s BlueMotion range of “eco” vehicles has received the 2010 World Green Car of the World Award today at the New York International Auto Show.
The BlueMotion Range, including the Polo, Golf and Passat was recognized by a 59-member jury. The BlueMotion Polo, Golf and Passat are laughing in the face of the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius, who missed out on the award.
"BlueMotion is one of the most successful efficiency brands worldwide, it stands for tremendous competence in efficient and economical drive trains at Volkswagen" said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, delighted about the appreciation by the jury.
The award was received this morning by Walter de Silva, the man who wears the pants when it comes to Volkswagen Group Design.
The BlueMotion Range was chosen through a hair-whitening process: as the “eco” technologies have a high degree of complexity, three green experts (no, not Martians) reviewed all the documentation related to each candidate and then created a short-list of finalists. Jurors used this in the second round of voting - all the members of the jury drive and evaluate new vehicles as often as other people breathe, so it is obvious that this lead to an objective collective view.
We are pretty serious about the partying stuff - after all, the execs have plenty of reason to ditch their neckties, as the Volkswagen Polo was named the 2010 World Car of the Year during the event.
