VW, Audi, Skoda Get New CEO in Spain

Currently the head of product marketing at the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand in Wolfsburg, 45 year old Ludger Fretzen has just been appointed CEO of Volkswagen-Audi Spain effective September 1, 2010. Fretzen will relocate to Barcelona, replacing 61 year old Juan Miguel Baselga, who is retiring.

Ludger Fretzen joined the Volkswagen Group in 1991. He became sales manager for Scandinavia at Volkswagen Passenger Cars in 1993, moving to Group sales management in 1996.

He was given responsibility for product strategy in the Marketing division in 1998. He has been in charge of global product marketing at Volkswagen Passenger Cars since 2000. Fretzen will be replaced by Luca de Meo (43), Director of Marketing, Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, who will take on these duties in addition to his other responsibilities.

Juan Manuel Baselga has been with the Group since 1987, initially holding responsibility for central marketing and exports from Spain at the SEAT brand (Martorell). In 1991 he moved to Volkswagen-Audi Spain as sales director for Spain and was appointed CEO of the company, which manages the Volkswagen, Audi and Škoda brands in Spain, in 1993. He was in charge of SEAT sales in Spain from 1996 to 2004 before returning to the role of CEO at Volkswagen-Audi España in January 2005.

The German carmaker has recently confirmed it is considering adding Alfa Romeo to its portfolio of brands, although Fiat is opposing. In fact, the Italians plans to sell no less than 500,000 Alfas a year, so a decision to sell is still questionable.
