If you're looking for a compact luxury crossover SUV then you're bound to end up comparing the BMW X1 and the Volvo V40 Cross Country. Both of these cars are versatile, reliable and offer good value for the money. Automotorundsport decided to compare them and see which is better.
The BMW was a xDrive28i X1 with a 2-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that boasts 245 HP and 228 lb-ft (309 Nm) of torque hooked up to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The Volvo V40 XC AWD T5 has a 5-cylinder turbocharged engine with 254 HP and 265 lb-ft (360 Nm) of torque and is hooked up to an automatic 6-speed transmission.
The Volvo XC has more safety features, in the classic Scandinavian way. Also, it is better equipped and cheaper than its German competitor. Both cars are stylish and aimed at the lower middle class.
Using the V40 for a while will reveal that the Swedish car is actually more of a hatchback than a wagon. It has a small cargo area and the backseats are cramped and offer little room. Furthermore, the ground clearance of the Volvo is definitely not sufficient to be used as a proper cross country vehicle.
Unfortunately, it's almost the same story with the X1. Despite its name, that reminds us of BMW's SUVs, the X1 has a low seating position that gives you the impression you're still in a sedan. However, the cargo space is better in the Bimmer and so is the leg room in the back.
Dynamic-wise, the X1 wins the contest without breaking a sweat. Despite its slightly higher construction, it feels a bit like a 3 Series Touring. The steering is precise, always accurate and sensitive at the same time. You always know what's under the front wheels.
The Volvo, on the other hand, is completely different. It's too harsh, it has catapult-like strokes when going over bumps and annoying on long journeys. The steering provides far too little feedback from the front wheels and the all-wheel-drive system feels like a traditional front-wheel one.
Bottom line, the X1 is a far better car. Although the V40 offers you top of the line security equipment and lots of features that are specially designed to keep you and the people around you safe (auto-braking systems, drowsiness detection, cruise control with distance control, etc) the X1 is the driver's choice. It offers more space and a bigger trunk, consumes marginally less and gives you a lot more driving fun.
