Virtually all major manufacturers now have a small SUV/crossover of some sort, all of which are doing very well, with this particular market sector experiencing a massive rise in popularity, in the last few years. Volvo is keen to get a small model out, to try to get a piece of the action.
However, the development of their small SUV, which is expected to be called the XC30 or XC40 has yet to commence, as the Swedish manufacturer has yet to find a suitable platform to underpin it. They say that their current range of platforms, which share a lot of bits with the previous-gen Fords, are not really suitable for the task, and their new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) is too big to be used with the model.
They aim to reach a platform-sharing agreement with another automaker soon, otherwise the project will have to be put completely on hold, until this is achieved. Discussions are underway, though, and since the small SUV/crossover sector is just so popular, they undoubtedly want to speed things up.
