To challenge the status quo of the BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG E63, and Audi RS6 in the mid-sized segment, Volvo plans to release Polestar versions of the S90 sedan and V90 wagon. If we’re lucky, the go-faster Volvos will churn out 600 PS (592 HP).
This information comes from our friends at Motor Trend, who sat down for a chat with Peter Mertens. The R&D head honcho at Volvo told the publication that the S90 Polestar and V90 Polestar would definitely happen. Mertens also said that the 2.0-liter Drive-E four-cylinder engine can be tuned to deliver up to 450 PS (445 horsepower). Impressive? You bet it is!

What’s more, the technology exists. Remember that Volvo presented the 2.0-liter Triple Boost four-cylinder engine, a masterpiece that churns out 450 PS with the help of a good old supercharger and two turbochargers spooled up by electricity.

The rear wheels of the Volvo S90 Polestar and V90 Polestar will be motivated by an electric motor. Compared to the 87 HP electric motor of the T8 Twin Engine powertrain, the Polestar treatment is said to boast a more powerful unit for a total system output of 600 PS. Indeed, that's a lot of get-up-and-go.

When all is said and done, Volvo is on the right track with its go-faster ambitions. As a brief reminder, the 2017 Volvo S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar are the fastest road-legal Volvo cars ever produced thanks to a 2.0-liter Drive-E T6 four-banger that churns out 367 horsepower and a lot of torque.

When will Volvo put these models into production? Firstly, we’ll have to wait for the 90 series R-Design visual package to be launched. Secondly, there’s a 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country in the pipeline. If my intuition is bang on the money, the Polestar duo will make its first public outing no later than early 2018.
