Volvo Concept 40.1 and Volvo Concept 40.2 Break Cover

After Volvo teased us on Snapchat in the last week with snippets of two design studies, the Swedish manufacturer has finally taken the veils off the Volvo 40.1 Concept and Volvo 40.2 Concept. Before we go any further, it’s necessary to mention that the Concept 40.1 (pictured) is the crossover and the Concept 40.2 is the sedan.

The two design studies represent our first taste of the global small car strategy that will bear fruit in the form of the Volvo V40, Volvo S40, and Volvo XC40. All models (as in the hatchback, sedan, and crossover) will be underpinned by the Compact Modular Architecture.

“CMA has helped us to capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars. They have an energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd,” said Thomas Ingenlath, the senior VP of design at Volvo.

If the V40, S40, and XC40 will borrow the aesthetic cues of the 40.1 and 40.2, then Volvo is entitled to pop the champagne and celebrate. The first model in the 40 Series to enter production is the 2017 Volvo XC40. The V40 will be released a year later. At the present moment, nothing is known about the next-generation S40. The rumor mill suggests sometime between 2018 and 2019, probably after the arrival of the V40.

In its quest to sell 1 million electrified cars by 2025, the Swedish manufacturer will bring a CMA platform-based “pure battery electric vehicle” to market in 2019. The all-electric compact model will slot above the T5 Twin Engine PHEV powertrain. Speaking of which, the T5 Twin Engine is a front wheel-based system that combines an electric motor with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine. By comparison, the T8 Twin Engine is an all wheel-based system that combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric engine.

“The new 40 series cars have the potential to improve our market penetration in an important growing segment,” declared Hakan Samuelsson, the president and chief executive officer of Volvo. “An electric powertrain program including both a new compact Twin Engine plug-in hybrid as well as a pure electric car are central to the CMA architecture.” Don’t know about you, but Volvo is on the right track with its 40 Series family of models.
