Volvo's 40 Series Goes for Black With New Special Edition Trim

According to the Swedish car manufacturer, the three models in the Black Edition configuration feature an Onyx Black paint finish. High-gloss black accents can be seen on the roof, window surrounds, and side mirror casings.

The grille sports a black look, too, and the corporate logo adorning it has an identical finish. The same goes for the emblems at the rear. The vehicles ride on 20-inch light alloy wheels that feature a five twin-spoke design in diamond cut/high-gloss black.

For the interior, Volvo chose a similar scheme. Those stepping foot inside will see the anthracite-colored headliner that fits the seat upholstery. The company also mentions electric seat adjustment with memory function and aluminum door sills.

The Black Edition proposal builds on the Plus and Ultra trim levels. As a result, the special versions of the Volvo EC40, EX40, and XC40 benefit from generous equipment. The list includes the Harman Kardon premium sound system, Android Automotive-based infotainment system, keyless entry, electric tailgate, and others. On top of these, the three models feature numerous active and passive safety items for safer journeys and more pleasant daily commutes.

Volvo says interested parties can combine the new Black Edition specification with all drivetrain variants. There is a catch, as the EX40 is only available in the Plus configuration when it comes to the Black Edition trim if chosen with the 235 hp (238 ps/175 kW) single-motor powertrain. The same goes for the EC40 when specifying it with the same assembly.

Pricing starts at €58,090 (equal to $63,243) for the EC40 Plus Black Edition. The EX40 Plus Black Edition kicks off at €56,590 ($61,610), and the XC40 Plus Black Edition at €49,190 ($53,554). The high-specced Ultra trim level will set buyers back at least €63,490 ($69,122), €62,590 ($68,142), and €51,190 ($55,731) for the EC40, EX40, and XC40, respectively.

According to the car manufacturer, the Black Edition configuration represents a premiere on the aforementioned models for the 2025 model year. Production will kick off next month (April 2024), and subsequently, the first units will start arriving at showrooms in selected European countries.

Mind you, for now, Volvo has only announced the EX40, EC40, and XC40 Black Edition models for Germany, but there is no reason to believe they won't launch in other countries in the Old Continent. Moreover, we also think the Black Edition vehicles might cross the Atlantic Ocean to arrive at dealers in the United States of America.
