Volkswagen Group will sell ten million cars a year by 2018 to become the world's largest automaker, company CEO Martin Winterkorn said in an interview today.
Speaking to Automotive News, Winterkorn said he is confident about his company reaching its volume sales target earlier than planned, but added that Volkswagen also airms at improving its hybrid and electric car deliveries.

With 9.07 million vehicles sold last year, the Volkswagen Group has about five years to increase its global sales with almost one million units and reach the ten million goal.

Japanese automaker Toyota, Volskwagen's biggest rival in the battle for automotive world domination, has announced, about two months ago, that it also plans to boost its worldwide sales beyond ten million examples a year. Now the world's largest car manufacturer, Toyota wants to achieve its goal using the new TNGA modular platform, which is scheduled to debut in 2015.
