After hearing word that production of the Porsche Panamera bodies at their factory in Honover could stop come the next generation, Volkswagen employees there are now urging the company to think of a model, a volume model that they could build there.
This is of course a union thing, mostly concerning workers and paychecks, but it's amazing to see just how important the workers' right are with VW. Hanover has a massive 14,000-strong workforce that makes about 150,000 T5 vans plus about 30,000 Amarok pickups every year. Added to that is 20,000 very expensive Panamera bodies, painted and welded there.
The factory is running only at 70 percent capacity because of slow demand for commercial vehicles in Europe. The reason why workers at VW's second largest German factory are agitated is because a new factory in Poland, near Poznan, is being considered for the Crafter.
"Porsche may well want the Panamera in Leipzig. We can imagine that too, but only if there is adequate compensation," said Thomas Zwiebler, a member of the supervisory board.
