In America, a van isn’t good unless it’s got some sort of V8 and a shiny grille, but the Europeans make vans out of superminis. The Corsa, the Fiesta, the Peugeot 207, all have served their role as light commercial vehicles. What they lack in practicality and load space they make up for with their nimble chassis and frugal diesel engines.
But if it’s lightness you want, it doesn’t get much better than the new Golf. The MkVII that’s just gone on sale across Europe is built on a modular chassis that makes it much lighter than its predecessor. With a whole host of highly efficient diesel and turbo petrol engines, the Golf is ideally suited for life as a small van.
The only problem: the badge. The people’s car is now the rich people’s car, and using the Golf shape for a van would diminish its image on this competitive market.
