We’ve known for some time now that Volkswagen is working on a Cabrio version of the compact crossover it introduced back in 2017. The new T-Roc will make its first public appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but the Germans couldn’t wait that long to reveal the exciting new car.
Regardless where you stand on convertible crossovers and SUVs, there’s no denying the appeal of this version of the T-Roc. Going down a path walked before by models like the Beetle and Golf, the T-Roc uses the same Volkswagen approach to convertibles when it comes to the roof: a soft-top.

As per Volkswagen, the roof can be opened in nine seconds, both when the car is stationary and when it is on the move, at speeds that do not exceed 30 kph (18 mph).

To ensure the safety of the occupants in this version of the T-Roc, VW had to make some changes. It added a reinforced windscreen frame, made structural modifications, and fitted a roll-over protection system that kicks in as soon as a defined lateral acceleration or vehicle tilt is detected.

The Cabrio T-Roc will carry over all the technological advancements in terms of gadgets found in the usual range. This time, however, VW is offering the possibility of the car being at all times online, thanks to the integrated eSIM.

Two screens are offered as an interface between the car and driver, an 8-inch one as standard and an optional 11.7-inch one part of the Active Info Display.

The broad range of engines usually available on the T-Roc range will not be available for the Cabrio, at least not in the beginning.

The market launch of the car is scheduled for spring 2020. The T-Roc will sell then with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine developing 115 ps, and a 1.5-liter 150 ps engine, both gasoline. The engines can be paired to a manual six-speed transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch.
