The Vauxhall/Opel twin-turbo 2.0-liter diesel puts out 195 hp and, until now, only buyers of the Astra GTC had the pleasure of specifying it for their new cars. Now, though, Vauxhall has made it available throughout the entire Astra range, which includes the hatchback and the estate version.
This enables both body styles to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 8 seconds, before topping out somewhere around the 135 mph (216 km/h) mark. However, aside from the high-end punch, this engine’s second (smaller) turbo kicks in at very low rpm, giving the car 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) from 1250 rpm.

However, buying a diesel is a decision based more on fuel economy than outright performance, and here as well, the twin-turbo engine is very good, returning a claimed 55.4 mpg (5.1 l/100 km). If you are interested in buying an Astra with this engine, in hatchback form, the car will set you back £24,095, while the Sports Tourer is £25,095.
