Stricter emissions regulations that what we have in Europe have prevented most manufacturers which offer diesel engined cars to sell them in the US. However, as diesel have gotten cleaner and more refined, they have gained significant popularity in the States as well.
The VW Jetta and Passat TDI, as well as Audi’s Q7 diesel are three of the more successful diesels on sale in the US today. However, the list will be completed by an additional 15 models, within the next 24 months. However, no manufacturer would bring its diesels over to the US if they though they wouldn’t sell, would they?
This is why we are sure all automakers which are planning to bring diesels to the US are undoubtedly aware that out of the last 23 months, diesel sales have risen for 22 of them. Also, from the start of 2012, diesel sales have also increased by almost a third (27.5%).

While this may be less impressive than the growth registered by hybrids, the sales of which rose by 63.5%, it is nevertheless impressive. Predictions indicate that by 2018, diesels will gain considerable popularity in the US, and will end up representing 12.4% of all new cars sold - still far behind Europe, but getting there.
