One of the ways in which a car can remain pretty much in the same condition as it was when new is to spend most of its life in the hands of the same owner. If it doesn’t, chances are it will get damaged or modified one way or the other.
When it comes to high-profile, rare cars such as the Shelby GT500 of the 1960s, chances that they spent their time in pretty much the same garage are very slim. Yet, it happens, and the 1968 convertible we have here is proof of that.

Sitting on the online auction block for a Barrett-Jackson event scheduled for next month, this 1968 Shelby GT500 is said to have been in the possession of the same family since it was sold decades ago. Dubbed by the auction house a “time capsule,” it comes in “relatively intact original condition.”

“This is one of the finest examples of an unrestored 1968 Shelby … the rarity of the documents present, along with original parts present, put this in the top three of original 1968 Shelbys that I have had the pleasure to observe,” said about this vehicle Kevin Marti of Marti Reports.

Like all cars of its breed, this Shelby hides a 428ci  (7.0-liter) V8 engine under its hood, linked to a 3-speed automatic transmission, and with just 36,000 miles on the odometer since it first rolled out Shelby’s garage.

Painted in Dark Green contrasted by a black interior, the car is equipped with power steering, power disc brakes, and a power convertible top.

The car is looking for a new owner and it will be offered complete with original documentation, ranging from the Build Sheet to the owner card. It is offered without reserve during the auction, and no estimate as to how much it is expected to fetch has been made.
