Honda has just announced that it will be cutting jobs at its production facility, in Swindon. A reported 800 workers will be sent home, as demand for the vehicles produced there is not as high as first anticipated. This is not a recent development, as despite the fact that the plant has a maximum production capacity of 250,000 units per year, only 166,000 units were made in 2012.
The plant builds the European Civic, Jazz (or Fit, in the US) and CR-V, and it recently hired an extra 500 workers, to cope with the entry into production of the CR-V SUV. However, none of the models built at the plant are in particularly high demand, and won`t be until Honda finally begins offering low capacity diesel engines, under the bonnet of their cars, as well as make the design of the Civic less awkward to look at.
Ken Keir, Executive Vice President of Honda Motor Europe, said: “Honda remains fully committed for the long-term to its UK and European manufacturing operations [ . . . ] However, these conditions of sustained low industry demand require us to take difficult decisions.”
