It is nothing short of uncommon for cars to be delayed. Just think of the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar. Or of the Tesla Cybertruck that has just seen the light of day in production form. The Lotus Evija has joined the exclusive club of delayed models. But it is finally getting delivered. Customers have been holding their breath for quite a while.
Two years behind schedule. That is also how much customers who bought a Lotus Evija had to wait after development was finally completed. The car has been in the making for four years. Discouraged by the delays that the British company has been transparent about through all these years, customers stayed at bay. Not all the 130 examples have been sold yet, so prospective customers can still buy one.

But there is good news for those who bought an Evija. The first units of the electric hypercar will be handed over to their owners during Monterey Car Week in California, scheduled to take place next month.

The Lotus Evija has been having a hard time for four years

The Lotus Evija was revealed four years ago. The carmaker was hoping to start delivering the examples in 2020. But the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and then the supply chain disruptions made the development of the model take a wrong turn.

But now the Evija is finally ready. The fact was confirmed by the presence of the limited series Evija Emerson Fittipaldi Edition at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last week. That one car is reportedly going to China, having been ordered by a customer there.

The name of the hypercar is a reference to "the first one in existence." And it does check a lot of firsts:
  • it is the first fully electric British hypercar;
  • It is the first hypercar from Lotus;
  • It is the company’s first model with an electrified powertrain;
  • It is the first completely new car to be launched under the Geely umbrella.

A Rimac Nevera rival, the Lotus Evija is powered by four electric motors that develop a total of 1,973 horsepower (2,000 PS) and 1,254 lb-ft (1,700 Nm) of torque. These are the numbers that make it the world’s most powerful electric hypercar.

Lotus claims that the Evija can hit 186 mph (300 kph) in less than 9 seconds and go all the way to 218 mph (350 kph) when flat out. To do that, the driver will have to select the Track mode from the five driving modes available. Range, City, Tour, and Sport are the other four.

Energy is stored in a mid-mounted 70-kWh battery pack that provides it with a 250-mile (402-kilometer) range. The pack was originally developed in partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering, together with the high-voltage systems. But the contract with Williams was terminated and caused a new delay in development. But now the wait is over. Monterey Car Week starts on August 11.
