Rumours have it that Toyota is looking to widen their range with a new sporty coupé, most likely placed under the existing GT 86. So, what we should expect?
According to Motoring, a small two-door rear-drive coupé from Toyota is likely to make an appearance shortly, under the 69DZ codename. The same source specifies a starting price tag of $20,000, but it also mentions that the tiny coupé will use a 1.5-liter engine.

The unit is allegedly going to develop around 130 HP but will tip the scales at only 980 kg, making it a potential rival for Mazda's popular MX-5 Miata.

"Designers have a final prototype that could very well go into production as is. The new coupé’s exterior look was inspired by the Toyota Sports 800 of 1965 but reinterpreted for the 21st Century. That’s why you will see roundish headlights and a large, signature grille on the new coupe,” a source close to Toyota told Motoring.

Toyota's new coupé will be designed in 2+2 configuration but only children will be able to sit in the back. Those looking for driving thrills will be happy to find out there won't be a CVT managing that 1.5-liter.

It is believed that Toyota will mate the small powerplant with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox, most likely Aisin-sourced units provided by the Toyota GT 86.

Excited? Well, you should be because judging by the popularity and driving thrills the GT 86 is currently holding, a smaller model with the same capabilities as its bigger sister would be a delight for those who hold the Mazda MX-5 in high regard. However, if the report is accurate, we'll have to wait at least until 2018 to see the new model on the road.
