Toyota plans to get back into rallying soon and along with the Yaris, the Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) division is working on a GT 86 too, which according to the last report is going to be ready soon.
Plans for such a car started last year and now TMG reports the car is near completion, already having received a Group A homologation while a FIA R3 one will come shortly.

“It’s very satisfying to see the GT86 CS-R3 taking shape and it is exciting to think it will be on the test track in just a few days,” said TMG principal engineer customer motorsport Nico Ehlert. “We have been working hard to reach this stage, with a lot of effort going into the preparation and planning to make sure we deliver a reliable and enjoyable car to customers from the beginning. So far everything is running on schedule and we are hitting our targets; we look forward to continuing that progress through the track-testing phase.”

As mentioned above, the new rally car goes by the name of GT 86 CS-R3 and along with lightweight body parts and improved suspension, the coupe also received a FIA-homologated safety cage, specially designed and calculated to allow weight optimization, tailor-made wiring looms, a motorsport engine ECU as well as all the onboard safety and racing harnesses.

Power will be supplied by the same 2-liter flat-four gasoline engine, but TMG said it’s output will go past 200 hp using performance parts. The engine block won’t be bored as the class only allows displacements between 1.6 and 2 liters.

Pricing hasn’t been released so far, with the model being available around the first quarter of 2015. TMG also announced the GT 86 CS-R3 will come both as a kit and as an already built car once they’ll evaluate the demand.
