Toyota Camry Facing Stiffest Competition Ever

Toyota did reinvent the Carmy to a significant extent when it came up with the new generation last year, but it had to do so while fighting off the yen. And now is the worst time for the Big T to sell a less than perfect car, because America’s best seller faces a record number of competitors according to Bloomberg.

Ford has brought out its big gun, a new Fusion that is also going to be sold in Europe, so development costs were more streamlined than with the first generation. Meanwhile, Honda is getting ready to launch a new Accord and is moving forward with PHEV and CVT transmission tech that is more efficient.

Nissan has a new Altima coming for the budget-minded, and Kia is increasing output of the Optima sedan due to high demand.

“We haven’t seen anything like this since back in the ‘90s, when Ford made a push with the Taurus,” said Jim Lentz, president of Toyota’s U.S. sales arm.
